| Q: Why bells? A: In Europe, crowds of spectators ring bells to cheer on ski racers. Bell ringing motivates athletes and adds to spectator's fun while saving their voices. You might remember hearing the crowds ring MOEN bells during the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. Our bells make watching skiing, and other sporting events, more fun and support groups like the US Ski & Snowboard Teams. Q: Is this a Norwegian tradition? A: Norwegians adopted the tradition from the Swiss who have been ringing bells at sporting events for generations. MOEN Bells came to the world's attention as cheering bells during the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. These bells are custom engraved and decorated with a colorful woven ribbon and an informational hang tag. Q: Are these bells really worn by animals? A: Yes. In Norway and many other European countries, farmers put bells on their livestock so that they can find animals in mountain pastures where they spend the summer. A farmer can often tell which animal is missing by the sound of the bell; individually crafted bells have slightly different sounds. MOEN Bells are worn by sheep, goats and cows in Norway. A bell will last about 10 years on a sheep with daily use. After 10 years, the handle may wear thin from the metal against metal friction and is replaced. The Mega MOEN Bell is the only one not intended for animal use...it's a store display, it also looks great on a fireplace mantel. Q: What are they made out of? A: Sheets of iron are formed into bell shapes, then coated with molten metal recycled from spent ammunition cartridges...from bullets to bells! Each bell has a unique golden patina that darkens with age. Q: Are the bullets from a war? A: No, the spent bullet casing are gathered from practice ranges used by the Norwegian military. Q: Where are they engraved? A: The bells are made in Norway, most are engraved there too. For rush orders on custom bells and smaller orders, we have an industrial engraver in Salt Lake City. Q: Can I get my logo on a bell? A. Yes! Call us after the Olympics and we'll get you going with your own logo bells! A. MOEN Bells have been successfully sold during events to raise money for organizations like the Vail Ski Club, the New England Ski Museum, and The Jimmie Heuga Center, which helps reanimate people with MS. Athlete signed bells are particularly popular items at auctions. MOEN Bells hit their highest auction value at an event benefiting a ski club. A US Ski Team Mega Bell signed by four gold medalists from Nagano (Picabo, Nikki, Jonny, Eric) went for $3500. It was a VERY cool bell! Smaller bells signed by one athlete have gone as high as $1000.
